Submerged

Small Format. Providence, RI. 2024.

You’re invited to immerse yourself in the opening of Small Format’s next group art exhibition, “Submerged”. There are infinite possibilities to be explored just within one color. Through artistic mediums ranging from cyanotype, painting, and photography we invite you to use blue as a filter for the literal and figurative experiences of a mood, an emotion, and all the moments strung together to create a memory.

This call to artist was dreamt into reality by Small Format resident artist Eli Kauffman who asked artist to dive into blue with them through the 240 poems by Maggie Nelson’s poetry book “Bluets.” Kauffman offered ideas of blue that could be representative of love, loss, passion, or melancholy. Artworks could also be about the color blue in a formal sense, as an abstract exercise, a temperature, or merely a simple pigment from the ocean or the sky. Please join us in celebrating this group of artists in the exploration of blue.

“Submerged” features artists from all over the East Coast:

Kim Arthurs, Jaden Bleier, Caleb Cole, Naylea Hernández, Eli Kauffman, Coleman Miller, MJ Sanqui, Al Spruill, Christl Stringer, Izzy Uliasz, Rebecca Weinberg Jones, Abaigeal Wright, Iris Wright, Vic Xu, Avital Zemel.
